    Description

Gorgeous hand beaded turtle umbilical fetish by Native American artist Michel Germain (Montagnais from Quebec). Brain tanned deer hide and seed bead decorated.  It measures 3" long by 2" wide.
In some native cultures it is the custom that b
efore a baby is born, its mother makes two beaded pouches, one shaped like a turtle and the other like a lizard. When the baby is born, its umbilical cord is placed inside one of them, the turtle for a girl and the lizard for the boy
    .
The turtle represents safety because of its hard shell and long life.
They hang the fetish from their cradleboard or attached them to children’s clothing.
The fetish protects the child from evil influences.
This beautiful fetish is not old but is definitely heirloom quality.
